Gavin was previously the all time record points scorer for Scotland. He won 61 caps for his country, captaining the national team 20 times. He was inducted into the International Rugby hall of Fame in 2003.

Gavin played in the 2009 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, alongside big name sporting and acting celebrities including Hugh Grant, Sir Ian Botham, Michael Vaughan, Sir Matthew Pinsent, Tim Henman and Sir Bobby Charlton.
